Is Your Child’s Speech Typical? - Pediatric Speech Therapy [SLIDESHARE]

tongue twister.pngIt is normal for all children to be difficult to understand during development.  However, there becomes a point in development where errors change from developmental to non-developmental.  At 18 months, you should be able to understand approximately 25% of what your child says. At 2 years of age, you should be able to understand 50%-70% of what your child says.  At 3 years of age, you should be able to understand approximately 80% of what your child says.  Lastly, by 4 years old, you should be understanding 90% of what your child says.  However, even at 4 years old, it is normal for your child to demonstrate some articulation errors.

Here are some additional blog posts that we've created here at Kinetic Kids, Inc, to help potentially address your child's speech therapy needs:

Age When Certain Sounds Have Been Fully Developed

The chart below outlines what sounds should be mastered at each age:

Age

Sound

3

M, P,H,W,B,N

4

F,T,K, G, Y, D

5

J, CH, SH

6

L, V, S, NG (runniNG)

7

TH, Z, R

If your child is demonstrating difficulty with one or more of these sounds after the age it should be mastered by, the error has become non-developmental.  At this point, a speech/language screen, and possibly an evaluation should be conducted by a speech/language pathologist. The speech/language pathologist will be able to determine whether there is a delay, and the next steps for treatment if necessary.
